Bisphenol A (BPA)
(US Food and Drug Administration: USFDA) มีความเห็นสอดคล้องกับหน่วยงานกฎหมายในประเทศแคนาดา ยุโรป และญี่ปุ่น ว่าปริมาณสาร BPA ที่พบในบรรจุภัณฑ์ไม่ทำให้เกิดอันตรายต่อสุขภาพที่รุนแรงและเฉียบพลัน ทั้งในผู้บริโภคทั่วไปตลอดจนทารกและเด็กเล็ก ซึ่งอนุญาตให้พบสาร BPAได้ในปริมาณที่ไม่เป็นอันตราย สามารถดูรายละเอียดเพิ่มเติมได้จาก http://fic.nfi.or.th//upload/early/media/4495.pdf และ www.chemicalsubstanceschimiques.gc.challenge-defi/bisphenol-a_e.html

Executive Summary
Products marketed for infants and children are not always completely safe for their use. Many contain toxic chemicals that may have detrimental health impacts for children exposed during critical stages of development. In this report, we analyze the extent to which five popular brands of baby bottles leach bisphenol A, a developmental, neural, and reproductive toxicant, into liquids coming into contact with them. We found that all five brands leach bisphenol A at dangerous levels found to cause harm in numerous laboratory animal studies.

California and the U.S. should reform chemical policy to ensure that all products on the market are safe for children.

Read more about our Environment Health program.

Bisphenol A is a Developmental, Neural, and Reproductive Toxicant

Scientists have linked very low doses of bisphenol A exposure to cancers, impaired immune function, early onset of puberty, obesity, diabetes, and hyperactivity, among other problems.
For example, in one recent study, a single, low dose of bisphenol A administered to a newborn rat resulted in hyperactive behavior.
Exposure to Bisphenol A is Widespread

Bisphenol A is most commonly used to make clear polycarbonate plastic for consumer products, such as baby bottles. Through use, this plastic breaks down and leaches bisphenol A into liquids and food to which it comes into contact.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found bisphenol A in the urine of over 95% of people they tested.
Alarmingly, the median level of bisphenol A in humans is higher than the level that causes adverse effects in animal studies.
Popular Baby Bottles Sold in California Leach Bisphenol A at Harmful Levels

Based on a consumer survey of the most popular baby bottle brands on the market, we selected five bottle types to determine the amount of leaching from each bottle. We found that the bottles tested from all five brands leached bisphenol A at levels found to cause harm in numerous laboratory studies, including:
• Avent

• Dr. Brown’s

• Evenflo

• Gerber

• Playtex

Recommendations for Parents

Parents have the right to know about chemicals in the products they purchase for their children. In the absence of good government regulations, but armed with the knowledge that some chemicals are a cause for concern, parents can take a few simple actions to limit their child’s exposure to these and other toxic chemicals.

At the store, parents should select baby bottles that are made from glass or a safer non-polycarbonate plastic. At home, parents should avoid washing plastic dishware with harsh dishwashing soap and hot water, which may allow chemicals to leach out of the plastic. For a useful tip sheet, parents should visit our toy safety page.

Recommendations for Policymakers

Parents cannot deal with these issues alone. The government must ensure the safety of all products on the market for children. California and the U.S. should:

Phase Out Hazardous Chemicals

Based on the weight of the scientific evidence showing the harm caused by exposure to bisphenol A, the government should act now. Given that data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that bisphenol A is present in humans at levels found to be harmful in laboratory studies, California and the U.S. should phase out the use of bisphenol A, especially in products used by children.

Inform Consumers about the Presence of Dangerous Chemicals

Parents currently have little information to inform their decisions when purchasing products for their family. Manufacturers should be required to label children’s products with the name of any potentially dangerous chemical and the specific health risks associated with the chemical.

Reform Chemicals Policy

Currently, manufacturers can put chemicals on the market without proving they are safe. Chemical manufacturers should be required to provide all hazard and health-effects information to the government so agencies can begin to assess the thousands of chemicals currently on the market for which little or inadequate data are available. Next, pre-market hazard and health-effects testing should be required for all new chemicals before they are introduced into commerce. Finally, the California Environmental Protection Agency must have the authority to protect public health by banning or restricting the use of a chemical if evidence shows that it can harm human health.

We have been bombarded with plastic in everything for years but people are beginning to question the chemicals that go into products.

Baby bottles and toys made out of polycarbonate plastic have been the focus of a lot of scrutiny because this type of plastic contains the hormone disruptor bisphenol A.
According to a report on a scientific study (Toxic Baby Bottles, Rachel L. Gibson, 2007) five of the more popular brands of baby bottles were tested and they all leached levels of bisphenol A that were unacceptable. No level is considered safe but the varying levels of bisphenol A found in the bottles went from 5 to 10ppb (parts per billion).
About Bisphenol A
Bisphenol A is a toxic hormone disruptor and has been linked to cancer, hyperactivity, birth defects, diabetes, lowered sperm count and early onset of puberty. It has also been associated with impaired immune systems and even obesity although further studies are needed. In many cases, laws are outdated so manufacturers are not required to prove the chemicals are safe.

The polycarbonate plastic breaks down so leeches into formula and/or food. This process happens faster when the plastic is heated, washed or an acidic food or drink is used.

Safer Suggestions and Options
Glass bottles are considered much safer and are quite sturdy so switching to glass is a sensible option.
Stainless steel

If you are using plastic bottles or containers, stay away from anything marked with the letters PC. You will usually see that near the recycling symbol if it’s there.
Polycarbonate plastics are also marked number 7 along with the recycling symbols. Safer plastics are usually softer and opaque while the bottles made with polycarbonate plastic are very hard and clear or tinted.
Avoid canned food or cut down as much as possible. Bisphenol A is in some of the plastic used in the lining of cans.
Avoid heating plastic bottles and containers in the microwave. Glass containers are better options.
For toys, it’s just as important to make sure safer plastics are used because they all have the potential to end up in a small child’s mouth. There are many wooden toys that are much safer and in some cases much more attractive.
Environmental organizations along with parents in the U.S. and Canada are calling to ban baby bottles made with polycarbonate plastic. While some manufacturers say findings are exaggerated and biased, there are safer alternatives. It would be in everyone’s best interest for them to phase out plastics containing bisphenol A.

PLASTICS GUIDE

#1 - PET or PETE: polyethylene terephthalate is used in many soft drink, water, and juice bottles. It's easily recycled, and accepted by most curbside municipal programs and just about all plastic recycling centers.

#2 - HDPE: high-density polyethylene is used in milk jugs, detergent and shampoo bottles. It is widely accepted by most curbside municipal programs and recycling centers.

#3 - PVC: Vinyl or polyvinyl chloride is a bad, bad plastic. Soft PVC often contains and can leach toxic phthalates, and can also off-gas chemicals into the air. It's used in some cling wraps (yikes!), many children's toys, fashion accessories, shower curtains, and detergent and spray bottles. To top it off, PVC isn't recyclable, either.

#4 - LDPE: low-density polyethylene is used most in plastic shopping bags, some cling wraps, some baby bottles and reusable drink & food containers. It is recyclable at most recycling centers (and many grocery stores take the shopping bags) but generally not in curbside programs.

#5 - PP: polypropylene can be found in some baby bottles, lots of yogurt and deli takeout containers, and many reusable food and drink containers (you know, the Tupperware- and Rubbermaid-types). It is recyclable in some curbside programs and most recycling centers.

#6 - PS: polystyrene is used in takeout food containers, egg containers, and some plastic cutlery, among other things. It has been found to leach styrene--a neurotoxin and possible human carcinogen--and has been banned in cities like Portland, Ore. and San Francisco. Still, it persists and is not often recyclable in curbside programs, though some recycling centers will take it.

#7 - Everything else, and this is where the waters get a bit murky. First, and perhaps most notably, #7 includes PC, or polycarbonate, which has been making headlines lately because it has been found to leach bisphenol A (BPA), a hormone disruptor that mimics estrogen.
But that's just the tip of the #7 iceberg; though you're less likely to see them in the grocery store than some of the others, the burgeoning crop of bioplastics (made from plant-based material rather than the usual petroleum base for plastic) also falls under this umbrella, for now, at least. Most common of these is PLA, or polyactide, which is most commonly made with corn, these days. It isn't easily recycled, though it can be composted in industrial composting operations--your kitchen composter most likely doesn't create enough heat to help it break down.

* 40 billion pounds of PET waste will be added to our landfills within only a decade.

* Americans buy about 31 billion plastic beverage containers every year.

Chemical in Baby Bottles, Other Plastics May Cause Cancer Animal Studies Have Linked Bisphenol A to Harm During Pregnancy Read more: http://www.theda

Pregnant women who absorb a common chemical from everyday plastic products such as water bottles and other containers could be putting their unborn children at risk of developing cancer and other diseases when they reach adulthood. Animal studies done at Duke University Medical Center found that exposure in the womb to bisphenol A (BPA) caused changes associated with obesity, cancer and diabetes. Interestingly, when pregnant mice were also given folic acid, the effects of BPA were mitigated. This study should definitely make consumers pause, because scientists have reported that around 95% of human adults test positive for BPA. The chemical is similar to the female sex hormone, and has therefore been suspected of possible harm for years. Clearly, more tests need to be done on BPA. Animal studies don't always scale up to effects seen among human beings. But the results are one more piece of evidence in the case against synthetic hormone-mimicking compounds. To be safe, consumers may choose the route of precaution, and try to avoid BPA-containing plastics, especially while pregnant. BPA is found in hard plastics that carry the recycling number 7. They are often clear but may be tinted. Common examples include water bottles and coolers, baby bottles, toys and utensils. Specific plastic names include polycarbonate, Lexan and polysulfone. Use glass baby bottles instead, and be sure to dispose of plastic bottles that are more than a year old, cracked or scratched, in order to minimize exposure. A California Bill recently took aim to ban BPA from certain toys, pacifiers, baby bottles and teethers for children under 3, but was defeated.

Children's Bath Products Have Toxic Ingredients

Shampoos and Other Children's Bath Products Have Toxic Ingredients That Aren't on the Label
Nonprofit group's tests find formaldehyde and 1,4-dioxane in children's shampoos, bubble baths and baby lotions. See complete list of brands that had one or both chemicals.

The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics today will reveal which brands of children's shampoos, bubble baths and baby lotions tested positive for formaldehyde and 1,4-dioxane, two chemicals that have been linked to serious health problems, including cancer.

You won't find these chemicals on ingredient lists, though you might find marketing claims like "gentle" and "cure" on the suspect products, according to the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, a national coalition of nonprofit health and environmental organizations.

Of 48 products tested, 67% had 1,4-dioxane. Of 28 products tested, 82% had formaldehyde. See below for a list of brands that did and did not have the chemicals.

Not waiting for the full report, the cosmetics industry attacked the group in a press release, calling the allegations "patently false and a shameful and cynical attempt by an activist group to incite and prey upon parental worries and concerns in order to push a political, legislative and legal agenda." The Personal Care Products Council questioned the scientific integrity of the report, and said that levels of the chemicals found were extremely low, within regulatory limits and safe for use. It defended the use of formaldehyde and formaldehyde-releasing compounds as a safe preservative.

True, the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics is pushing a political, legislative and legal agenda, and the $250 billion global cosmetics industry has come to show concern about publicity over the group's reports.

The Campaign has previously exposed high levels of phthalates, formaldehyde and toluene in nail polish, leading to the phase-out of the use of those chemicals by several major brands; exposed the presence of lead in many lipsticks (see 11 lead-free lipsticks). The campaign supports both the Environmental Working Group's Skin Deep database of chemicals in cosmetics and personal care products, and state and federal proposals to regulate the use and disclosure of certain suspect chemicals in cosmetics and personal care products.

Check out this list of 10 non-toxic baby shampoos from Greenopia.

Environment California Research
and Policy Center
(Bisphenol A)

Environment California Research and Policy Center

Avent, Dr. Brown’s, Evenflo,
Gerber และ Playtex

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

Environment California Research and Policy Center

Environment California Research and Policy Center

Phthalates

Nitrosamine
